We shall study the great innovations which took place during the Renaissance and their role in the formation of the modern world.

The lecture series program

How the Renaissance Began? The Revolution of Petrarch

In this lecture we shall discuss the beginnings of the Italian Renaissance: what the term ‘Renaissance’ means? When and where did it begin? Who were the first Renaissance men and what did they do? What was the humanist movement which is associated with the Renaissance? Against what the Renaissance men struggled and what they wanted to achieve? What was the role of the ‘father of the Renaissance’ Francesco Petrarca (1304-1374) and how exactly the Renaissance is related to the modern world?

The Republic of Florence at the Heart of the Renaissance: The Revolution of Bruni

In this lecture we shall focus on the place which became associated with the Renaissance: the republic of Florence. We shall examine the rise of the Florentine republic and the emergence of the humanist movement, pointing out the complex relations between the humanists and politics. To what extent the pro-republican rhetoric of the humanists was instrumental for modern movements promoting equality and democracy? We shall focus on Leonardo Bruni (1370-1444) aiming at addressing the question in what sense the true nature of politics was exposed in the Renaissance

Humanism against the Church? The Revolution of Valla

Can we identify during the Renaissance an increase in secularization? In this lecture we shall deal with the humanist criticism of the Church focusing on the activity of one of the most important humanists: Lorenzo Valla (1407-1457). We shall learn about the “Donation of Constantine” and about the role assigned by Valla to the humanist disciplines as mediators between man and God

Towards Spiritual Renovation – The Revolution of Ficino

Can we identify a spiritual crisis in the Renaissance? Was the spiritual crisis in the Renaissance a prelude to Luther and the Reformation? In this lecture we shall focus on an important figure: Marsilio Ficino (1433-1499). We shall trace signs of a spiritual crisis in Ficino, emphasizing his attempts to deal with this crisis and to find satisfying solutions

The Sistine Chapel: Creating a New World

Almost like the gaze of God (in Latin Visio Dei) that tells the whole story using his imagination and interpretation, so too the Sistine Chapel, painted by Michelangelo, remains to this day the pinnacle of the artist’s interpretation, combining art and technology. You can see the world in a comprehensive view from one side, and it has become a milestone in the transition from “darkness to light” from the other side. This lecture will demonstrate how the Sistine Chapel has inspired a new perspective in creating a “narrative” in the world of art photography and creating works that depict and interpret reality, through a cultural, national, and personal worldview.
